Adorra's Story

Adorra’s Story

Adorra is Grade mare who is approximately 10 years old. Adorra came to Bethany Pappani Training as very sad and confused horse, exhibiting very dangerous behavior.  Adorra was impossible to handle, and unsafe to lead. She was also severely underweight. Nearly all her handlers and equine professionals in varying fields had given up hope after seeing her behavior first-hand. Upon her evaluation, I felt we could work with Adorra and teach her the value of being with two-leggeds.

“Adrianne & Adorra”

“I bought Adorra when she was 3 years old and green broke. She was my first horse and I thought I could handle her. I could at first but after a couple of setbacks, my confidence was shattered. I knew I need help. I was only 17, and having no money I started looking for someone who could help me.

I found several people that said they could, but never made any difference. It wasn’t until a year ago that my Mom purchased a horse from Bethany that we met. It still took me an entire year before I had the courage to call her and ask her for help.

At this point Adorra was not being ridden at all because I did not know what to do. She would turn and run off when ever I tried to lead her anywhere. She would not go in the trailer; she would not stand for any farrier. And she hated the bit.

Bethany picked her up in a trailer and she was pretty good. After only being in part time training, for 2 short months I can lead her with out her taking off, and I ride her on the trail with Bethany. She also has had her feet trimmed by Len Judd and she just stood there like an old pro! No one was even holding her lead rope.

I cannot even express in words how happy and thankful I am. When I called Bethany for help, I was at the end of my rope and Adorra was pulling it! As far as I was concerned, this was my last effort to have the horse of my dreams. Thanks to Bethany, Adorra is just that horse.”

“Due to Adorra’s dangerous behavior of turning her hind end into you and running away she deteriorated in her stall emotionally and physically, as it was not safe to take her out. I started with boundary work and bodywork. We put her on a nutrition program to safely gain 200 pounds. Adorra was worked on the longe cavesson to build her topline and regain her balance.  Len Judd, of www.lenjuddhorsepower.com also helped me tremendously with this mare. I could not have achieved these results without his brilliant communication and skills.”

Adorra's Rehab

Adorra’s Rehabilitation

Adorra’s rehabilitation began with building trust. Simple boundary work (us respecting hers) was the first step. The mare was genuinely surprised we even acknowledged she had boundaries.  Adorra’s current condition was poor, the mare needed nutritional support as well. She was evaluated and put on a customized supplementation program of free fed grass hay & pasture mix, a blend of oat, beardless wheat, barley & rye grass. Additionally, a daily bucket of beet pulp shreds, Integrity complete feed, Farnam Weight Builder, a flax based fat supplement, Forco probiotic, and Rice Bran Oil.

Adorra also lacked the body condition and muscle mass to carry a rider, as she had spent literally years idle in an approx 24x24 space.  I wanted to start with basic Cavesson work and Farrier service, but first I knew Adorra & I needed the special attention of trainer Len Judd, of Len Judd Horsepower. Len Judd’s natural horsemanship philosophy of “feel, timing, & balance” as well as his commitment to communication between horse and rider proved beneficial to Adorra’s progress. After some simple groundwork from a slightly different perspective, I took my first lesson with Len in just a halter, bareback. Our second session we were riding down the trail. This mare really wanted to be a good horse, she was just confused and checked out. After a very short time, I was able to work with Adorra from the ground safely, a must to build her topline. Through a program of daily attention, nutritional support, groundwork & gymnastics, as well as trail work, Adorra was able to return to her family after only 75 days.
